Description
Dear Editor: The uses of tobacco, alcohol and other drugs continue to be major problems. An obvious solution to these problems consists of preventive interventions. If successful, preventive interventions improve public health and thus also reduce health care and other costs attributable to substance use. Since the main thrust of prevention is to deal with problems before they emerge, adolescence is a period of particular concern. During the last four decades or so, several preventive interventions have been developed in order to counteract substance use among adolescents. The most common approach is to inform adolescents about the risks associated with substance use. Most information is provided through school-based drug education, but the media also play a crucial role. The information may take various forms, sometimes being factual and sometimes being fear arousal. In either way, the basic assumption is that, if adolescents are informed about the dangers of substance use, they will make rational decisions to abstain.
